DANZ 2010 Workshop Programme
DANZ TRAINING 2010 - KEEPING DANCE MOVING
The DANZ training programme keeping dance moving provides a range of workshops, masterclasses and forums as professional development opportunites for dancers, teachers of dance, dance students and those interested in community dance.
This programme, developed over the past five years, is designed to strengthen the dance industry and help people in their dance work. It covers a range of topics including artists working in schools, physical conditioning, injury prevention, teaching best practice and choreographic skills.
DANZ will also support a range of partnership projects in 2010 by working with other organisations including the New Zealand International Arts Festival, Pasifika Festival and the Goethe Institut.
DANZ is providing subsidised places in some of these workshops for freelance dancers who may not otherwise be able to attend - contact DANZ for details. This series of DANZ workshops will be delivered in various places around the country and will include the following:
Perfect Performance 3
Tania Huddart returns with a workshop that addresses common injuries of the shoulder and hip/leg. The workshop includes a brief overview of the anatomy of the shoulder, hip and leg. Exercises that can help to strengthen and mobilize the body effectively to enhance performance will be explored, aiming to reduce the incidence of injury to these areas. For dance teachers, senior students and body workers.

Freelance Dance Work in Schools
A workshop on understanding the school environment and curriculum with Sue Cheesman. Approaches and techniques for teaching dance in schools and preparing dance work. Suitable for LAT, community dance, freelance, studio teachers or aspiring teachers who are interested in different ways of teaching dance.

How to Count, Breathe, Talk and Teach dance
A workshop on organising your dance teaching and inspiring your students with tutor Tania Huddart. The day comprises of two 3 hour workshops. People can attend one or both workshops. For aspiring and established teachers of dance. Workshop 1 - Best practice in dance teaching (10am - 12:30pm): Strategies for self evaluation and voice care, the use of imagery, how to motivate students and provide feedback. Both practical and theoretical exercises are used to explore these concepts in a cooperative way Workshop 2 - Class structure (1:30pm - 5pm): Creative ways to enhance your dance classes from the warm-up and class development, to the dance creation and cool down sections of a typical class. The emphasis will be on exploring ways your students can contribute creatively in order to extend their enjoyment and interest in dance. These strategies will also help them acquire the necessary technical and basic performance skills and improve student retention and motivation.

Tania Huddart is a Pilates and studio dance specialist. She started her career as a dance teacher working in South Africa and Europe and studied Pilates in London and New York. In 2002 she returned to Wellington to form Hearts and Bones Pilates Centre. In recent years she has worked with injury rehabilitation and performance enhancement for dancers, using techniques that include Pilates and visualisation training. Tania is certified through the Pilates Method Alliance.
Sue Cheesman is an experienced Dance Educator and is currently Senior Lecturer in Dance Education at the University of Waikato. A dynamic presenter, Sue has worked both as dance artist and a dance educator. She has an eclectic range of skills and has worked as a dance animateur (community dance), choreographer and dance artist/educator both internationally (UK) and here.
Moss Patterson (Ngati Tuwharetoa) began his performance career in music and acting. He went on to study dance and choreography at UNITEC Performing Arts School in Auckland. For the past ten years Moss has danced and choreographed for Black Grace Dance Company, Footnote Dance, Touch Compass and Atamira Dance Collective. He performed at the Pacific International Arts Festival in Palau, Micronesia including his own choreographic work. Moss was awarded Best Choreography by Tempo dance festival and Best New Choreographer in the NZ Listener 2007. Moss has also been the recipient of Creative New Zealand's Tup Lang dance scholarship with Atamira Dance and also the Te Whakahaungia choreographic award by Toi Maori Aotearoa.
Gina Andrews, originally from Nelson, grew up doing ballet and jazz classes under both the IDTA and RAD syllabus in Nelson and completed her IDTA Associate level teachers' examinations in ballet and modern jazz. She has recently graduated from the three year Diploma at the New Zealand School of Dance, majoring in contemporary dance. During her full-time study, she particularly enjoyed working with renowned New Zealand and Australian teachers and choreographers, with a strong interest in creating and collaborating on new works. Gina is now based in Wellington, freelance dancing and teaching.
